You know what struck me first about Hotel San Roque? It’s tucked right into this gorgeous historic building on Esteban Ponte street, and I mean, you can actually feel the weight of history when you walk through those doors. Garachico isn’t your typical Tenerife beach town – it’s got this incredible story of being completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption back in 1706, then rebuilt stone by stone. The hotel sits right in the heart of all that rebuilt colonial architecture, and honestly, they’ve done something really special with the restoration here.

The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort that’s hard to pull off. I’m talking thick stone walls that keep things wonderfully cool (trust me, you’ll appreciate this in summer), but they’ve actually installed proper air conditioning and updated the bathrooms without ruining the character. The ceilings are these beautiful wooden beams, and some rooms have tiny balconies where you can watch the morning light hit the volcanic rock pools down by the harbor. Speaking of those pools – they’re literally a two-minute walk away, and they’re some of the most unique natural swimming spots in all of the Canary Islands. The locals use them year-round, which tells you everything you need to know.

What I really love about this place is how the staff seems to genuinely care about Garachico itself. They’ll tell you about the little family-run restaurants tucked away on side streets (definitely try the one near the old fortress), and they know which days the weekly market happens in the plaza. The breakfast setup overlooks the internal courtyard, and you can sit there planning your day while listening to the fountain – it’s one of those small pleasures that makes a hotel feel like more than just a place to sleep. Parking can be a bit tricky in the old town, but the hotel has arrangements with a nearby lot, and honestly, once you’re settled in, you’ll probably want to explore everything on foot anyway. The whole historic center is maybe ten blocks in any direction, and you’ve got the dramatic coastline, the old churches, and those famous rock pools all within easy walking distance. I mean, where else can you swim in volcanic tide pools in the morning and explore 16th-century architecture in the afternoon?
