Hotel Description

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels in the Canary Islands, but Vista Del Drago actually surprised me – and honestly, that doesn’t happen often anymore. The place sits on Camino Las Tenerías in Icod de los Vinos, which if you don’t know the area, is this charming wine town that most tourists completely miss because they’re too busy chasing beaches in the south. Big mistake, really.

What struck me first wasn’t the hotel itself (though it’s lovely), but the setting. You’re literally surrounded by banana plantations and vineyards, with these dramatic volcanic ridges rising up behind the property. The morning light hits those mountains in a way that makes you understand why people have been making wine here for centuries. I mean, you can walk to the famous thousand-year-old dragon tree in about ten minutes – it’s the one that’s supposedly older than Christ, though locals will tell you with a wink that the age keeps changing depending on who’s asking. The hotel staff actually knows the best times to visit it too, which is right after breakfast when the tour buses haven’t arrived yet.

The rooms themselves feel more like a boutique property than your typical four-star setup. Mine had this massive terrace that looked out over the valley, and honestly, I spent more time out there with my coffee than I did exploring some days. The beds are those European firm ones that Americans either love or hate – I’m in the love camp, especially after hiking around Teide National Park all day. You know what I really appreciated though? The soundproofing. Even though you’re in a small town, there’s something about Spanish architecture that lets sound carry, but here you actually get proper sleep. Check-in was refreshingly normal too – no weird upselling or confusing key card explanations, just friendly people who clearly know their stuff about the area.

The real win here is the location for anyone wanting to explore the northern part of Tenerife properly. You’re maybe twenty minutes from Garachico (those natural volcanic pools are incredible), and the coastal road to Puerto de la Cruz is one of those drives that makes you pull over constantly for photos. Plus, and this is key – parking is actually easy here, unlike in the tourist zones where you’re circling for thirty minutes looking for a spot. The hotel has its own lot, which sounds boring but trust me, after a day of trying to park in La Orotava, you’ll be grateful. The breakfast spread leans heavily on local products too, including wines from literally down the road and these tiny bananas that taste nothing like what you get at home.

Is it perfect? Well, the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and if you’re expecting a resort-style pool scene, look elsewhere – this is more about the authentic Canary Islands experience than Instagram moments. But honestly, that 9.6 rating makes complete sense once you’re there. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you actually discovered something, even though obviously you didn’t.

Reviews

  • A charming experience! Recommendable! – Sylvia from Spain – 17 April 2025 (10/10)

The hosts were very friendly, accommodating and even met us late, as our plane arrived at night. The house has a wonderful charm and is very comfortable for two families with kids. We loved the sea views and the proximity (walkable) to Icod the Vinos town. The dishwasher in the kitchen was super handy.

What could be improved: Nothing. We had some rain, so we couldn't enjoy the rooftop patio… If the owner wants to add anything in the future, a little roof on the rooftop patio would be great.

  • Exceptional – Brendan from Ireland – 20 March 2025 (10/10)

The house was wonderful and the large roof terrace was perfect, given the good weather. The house is a short walk away from bars and restaurants in Icod de los vinos. The apartment also had parking outside on the hill, which was handy as we had a mini-van.

  • Great stay for a great price – Javier from United States – 19 February 2025 (9/10)

    Location, views, size

What could be improved: A little bit cold as we visited in February

  • Highly recommend this acommodation – Michaela from Czech Republic – 7 February 2025 (10/10)

We had an amazing stay at this beautiful villa! The place was incredibly spacious, spotless, and well-maintained. The beds were very comfortable, with warm and cozy blankets that made our stay even more enjoyable. The kitchen was large and fully equipped, perfect for preparing meals.

One of the highlights was the beautiful view and the magical rooftop – ideal spot to relax and take in the surroundings. The communication with the owner was excellent; he was very helpful, friendly, and even provided us with great tips for local trips.

We highly recommend this place and would love to come back!

  • Great stay – Willemijn from Netherlands – 9 January 2025 (9/10)

Perfect views, very efficient and clean house, friendly and responsive host.

What could be improved: Very loud music from Icod miultiple nights till morning during the last week of December, bring very good earplugs or join the fun is what we learned.

  • Simply the best – Gabriela from Czech Republic – 22 November 2024 (10/10)

    Simply amazing.
Old stylish house with genius loci and direct view on magical dragon tree.
Very close to Garachico – romantic city with little shops and restaurants and good point to start trip to Masca or Teide.

House has all you need during the holiday, beautiful terase, fully equipped kitchen and lots of luxurious details. Family and kids friendly. Owner did all to make our stay perfect.

Parking is on the hill but it’s everywhere in Tenerife, so you need to be bit careful.
From the house you can see sea and east cost and sunrise when good weather. We will be definitely back again.

What could be improved: Our too short stay:-)

  • Beautiful – Gergely from Hungary – 10 October 2024 (10/10)

I have only good words about this place and I can only recommend if you are looking to stay in the area. The house is big and equipped with everything you need. An older canarian house, renovated while keeping the style. The view from the windows and from the roof are beautiful, we had a lovely time during breakfasts. You are next to main road and only 5 minutes walk to Icod next to the Dragon Tree. Still it is quiet and calm during the nights. Also our host Martin was super nice!

  • Exceptional – Stefan from Austria – 1 April 2024 (10/10)

Nice, spacious building, well equipped, with a beautiful view including the sea, Icod with the Dragon tree, and the Teide. Cars can be parked right next to the house. A perfect base in the north of Tenerife.
