Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Villa María on Camino Mesa Mota – honestly, the street looked pretty quiet and residential. But this place surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this really charming part of La Laguna, about a ten-minute walk from the old town center, and you can actually hear the birds in the morning instead of traffic noise. The building itself has this authentic Canarian feel without being too touristy about it, if that makes sense. Check-in was smooth – the staff actually remembered my name the next day, which doesn’t happen often at bigger hotels.
What really got me was how the place feels lived-in rather than sterile. The rooms are spacious (I mean, genuinely spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious), and mine had these traditional wooden shutters that you can actually open wide to let in the mountain air. The bathroom was modern but not trying too hard to be fancy – good water pressure, which honestly matters more than marble countertops when you’re dealing with Tenerife’s humidity. I loved that they have this little courtyard area where you can sit with coffee in the morning, and it’s quiet enough that you can hear the bells from the cathedral in the distance. Parking was easy too, which is honestly a relief because La Laguna’s old streets can be a nightmare if you’re driving a rental car.
The location is actually perfect if you want to explore the real Tenerife – you’re close enough to walk into town for dinner (try the tapas place on Calle Nava y Grimón if you go), but far enough from the main tourist strips that you feel like you’re staying somewhere locals might actually recommend. I took the bus to Santa Cruz a couple times, and the stop is maybe a five-minute walk away. The whole area gets pretty quiet after 10 PM, so don’t expect nightlife right outside your door, but that’s honestly what I was looking for. The staff gave me some really good recommendations for hiking trails I never would have found on my own, and they seemed genuinely excited to talk about the island rather than just rattling off the usual tourist spots. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re getting a real taste of the Canary Islands without paying resort prices – though I’d book ahead if you’re coming during festival season because places like this fill up fast with people who’ve figured out it’s a gem.

Thank you for a really nice stay, I would love to come back:) – Madalina from Romania – 14 February 2025 (10/10)
Very nice property, incredibly hospitable host
Delicious breakfast
Close to incredible walk, Camino Largo
What could be improved: The room was a bit cold at night, so pack warm pyjamas.A beautiful B&B near a beautiful city – Mitchell from United Kingdom – 6 February 2025 (9/10)
Our host Marco barely spoke a word of English, but even with that he managed to show care and personality with our morning breakfasts and the help he offered. The food was simple yet delicious, and the short walk down the beautiful promenade to the city centre made it very easy to go out in the evenings. If you're a hiker, this is as close to perfect for being near hikes (by car) and the city (by foot) as you're gonna get, with plenty of easy off-road (and locked) parking. Would highly recommend!
What could be improved: A tiny bit of mould in our room, but not a big deal!Very good – Cecilia from Sweden – 29 December 2024 (8/10)
It feels like an authentic Spanish villa and the staff is very nice and gives you a really good breakfast. It is quite close to the old city (walking distans and a nice walk).
Superb – Ann from United Kingdom – 22 December 2024 (9/10)
Great location easy to walk into town. 4 parking spaces.
Easy access to drive to the Anaga national park
What could be improved: Not sure where to park if the 4 spaces were full.Exceptional – Adina from Romania – 6 December 2024 (10/10)
A house with character, nice pieces of furniture, bug garden. Close to the centre (walking distance). Parking in front of the house.the breakfast is very good.
Lovely, traditional hotel on the outskirts of town – Alyson from United Kingdom – 13 November 2024 (9/10)
We loved the rustic feel of the hotel. We had a lovely room with beams and a terrace, comfortable beds and nice duvets. It was the perfect temperature to sleep with windows open but there are some very noisy cockerels nearby who seem to enjoy crowing all night!
Breakfast was good with cold options including cereal, meat, cheese, yoghurt and croissant. However, the freshly cooked omelettes were outstanding. Cooked to perfection and piping hot. My husband enjoyed his fried eggs and bacon too.
I chose this hotel because of the on-site parking and swimming pool. Although we didn't actually use the pool as we were too busy, it did look lovely (if cold).
What could be improved: The hotel was as advertised so we knew what to expect. There isn't a lot of storage in the bedroom and I had ants in my suitcase. It's an old building so this is not usual either. We would go back as it was great value for money.exceptional stay at Villa Maria – Pierre from Italy – 11 November 2024 (10/10)
the cosiness and comfort of the room, the poll close to the avocado tree, the varied and generous breakfast, the location at the end of a long path surrounded by palm trees straight to La Laguna down town!
