You know what surprised me about The Sea Balcony? It’s one of those places that completely overdelivers on what you’d expect from a 3-star hotel. I mean, when I first walked up to the building on Paseo Las Americas, I wasn’t expecting much – the street’s pretty quiet, tucked away from the main tourist drag in San Marcos, which honestly turned out to be perfect.

The location is actually brilliant if you know the area. You’re about a 10-minute walk from the black sand beaches (and trust me, those volcanic beaches are something else), but far enough from the crowds that you can actually sleep at night. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful – not that forced hotel smile stuff, but actually seemed to care about making sure I knew where the good local spots were. They pointed me toward this little café around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise, and the woman at the front desk gave me the real story about which beaches get too windy in the afternoons.

What really got me was the attention to detail throughout the place. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully laid out, and – here’s the thing that made me smile – they actually have proper blackout curtains that work. You’d be amazed how rare that is. The balconies (hence the name, I guess) give you these glimpses of the ocean between the buildings, and in the early morning when the light hits just right, it’s pretty magical. The WiFi was solid, which mattered since I was doing some work, and the whole place just felt clean and well-maintained in a way that suggested the owners actually care about the property. Sometimes you can tell when a place is just going through the motions, but this wasn’t that. Even the hallways smelled fresh – like they’d figured out that sweet spot between overly perfumed and, well, hotel-ish. San Marcos itself is this lovely little town that doesn’t get the attention that some of the bigger Canary Island destinations do, which means you get to experience a bit more of authentic local life without fighting through crowds of tourists at every turn.

  Perfect small apartment with everything you need. The beach is around the corner (or cliff), so you are protected from the sound of beach bars by that cliff, so you only hear the sea. Amazing view!
