The thing is, Puerto de Santiago isn’t one of those flashy resort towns that gets all the Instagram attention, which is actually part of its charm. You’re literally a two-minute walk from Playa de la Arena (that gorgeous black sand beach that most tourists miss because they’re all crowded into Los Cristianos), and honestly, the location alone makes this place worth considering.

What really struck me about El Sol – and I mean this in the best way – is how it feels like a proper local spot that just happens to welcome travelers. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which is refreshing when you’re used to those massive resort complexes where you’re just another room number. The building itself has that classic Canarian style without trying too hard, and my room had this little balcony where I could hear the ocean at night (not the traffic, thankfully – Manuel Ravelo is pretty quiet once evening hits). I was there in late October, so I can’t speak to the summer crowds, but the whole area felt wonderfully unhurried. The hotel’s pool area is small but gets great afternoon sun, and there’s something really satisfying about having a proper local café right around the corner where the regulars drink their cortados and argue about football.

Here’s the thing that really sealed it for me – the genuine local connections. The front desk guy, Miguel, actually grew up in Puerto de Santiago and gave me directions to this incredible family-run restaurant up the hill that I never would’ve found otherwise. And when I mentioned I was thinking about hiking in the area, he pulled out this hand-drawn map showing the best route to Acantilados de los Gigantes that avoids the tourist buses. That’s the kind of insider knowledge you just can’t get from the big chain hotels. Sure, El Sol isn’t going to wow you with fancy amenities or designer everything, but it’s got that 8.6 rating for good reason – it delivers exactly what it promises and then some. If you’re the type who values authentic local flavor over marble lobbies and wants to actually experience Tenerife rather than just photograph it, this is your spot. Plus, parking is actually manageable here, which anyone who’s driven around the southern coast will tell you is no small thing.
