Platanera Suites Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Platanera Suites on Calle Hércules, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical tourist trap hotel. The building has this understated elegance that feels authentically Canarian — none of that flashy resort nonsense you see everywhere else. I mean, when a four-star place manages to feel both polished and genuinely local, you know they’re doing something right. The entrance is welcoming without being over the top, and honestly, the whole vibe just puts you at ease from the moment you arrive.
The Heart of Icod de los Vinos
Here’s what I love about the location — you’re actually in Icod de los Vinos, not stuck in some sterile hotel district. This town has real character, with its famous thousand-year-old dragon tree just a short walk away (and trust me, it’s worth seeing even if you think you’re not into that sort of thing). The narrow streets around the hotel are lined with traditional Canarian houses, and you’ll find yourself wandering past local bars where people are actually speaking Spanish, not just catering to tourists. Couples seem to absolutely love this area — I can see why, since there’s something genuinely romantic about strolling these historic streets in the evening.
Your Home Base
The suites themselves are what really set this place apart from standard hotel rooms. Each apartment feels like you’re staying in someone’s well-appointed home rather than a cookie-cutter hotel room. The kitchen setup is actually functional — not one of those tiny kitchenettes that’s more for show than cooking. You know what’s nice? Having the option to grab some local ingredients from the market and prepare a simple meal, especially when you want a break from restaurant dining. The spaces are thoughtfully designed with enough room to spread out, which makes a huge difference when you’re staying more than just a night or two.
Local Insights
What most people don’t realize about staying here is how perfectly positioned you are for exploring the northern part of Tenerife. The wine region around Icod produces some surprisingly good bottles — nothing fancy, but honest local wines that pair perfectly with the Canarian cuisine. Parking isn’t the nightmare it can be in other parts of the island, which is a relief if you’re planning to rent a car and explore. The staff actually knows the area well and can point you toward the less obvious attractions, like the volcanic caves nearby that most tourists completely miss.
Why Guests Love It
There’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard to impress but just gets the fundamentals right. The combination of comfortable, well-equipped suites and an authentic location creates this perfect balance between having your own space and being immersed in local life. You’re not isolated in a resort bubble, but you’re also not roughing it — it’s that sweet spot that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the real Canary Islands. The high ratings make complete sense once you’ve spent a few days here; it’s the kind of place that exceeds expectations without making a big show of it.

I didn't give it much thought when booking this place so we were surprised to be sleeping in a little banana plantation! This museum opens later in the morning and closes pretty early so it didnt bother us at all. It has separate doors than the museum. The house itself looks old in a good way, very close to main street with cafes, restaurants and shop is just a few turns away. You can see El Drago if you climb the stairs to the park which is on the opposite side of the road. We were greeted by friendly personel. You also get their amazing Canarian bananas. The apartaments were super clean, has a TV, equipped kitchen. Beds were clean and comfy. If you need it there is a washing and drying machines a floor below. We found free street parking spaces easily in the evening right next to the suites. I would come back here anytime!

I liked that, although it maintained its authenticity, it also had modern amenities. It was very clean and spacious. Plus, the location is really nice and close to supermarkets and tourist attractions. As a bonus, we also had a wonderful view.
