This place sits tucked away on El Lomito street – and I mean really tucked away, you’ll probably drive past it twice before spotting the entrance. Masca itself is this impossibly dramatic village perched on cliff edges in Tenerife’s northwest corner, the kind of place that makes you wonder how anyone decided to build houses here in the first place. The drive up is honestly a bit nerve-wracking (those mountain roads are no joke), but once you’re there, you get why they made it adults-only. It’s not about being fancy – it’s about preserving this incredibly peaceful atmosphere where the loudest sound is usually goats bleating somewhere in the distance.

What strikes me most about Morrocatana is how it manages to feel both rustic and thoughtfully designed. The rooms have this authentic Canarian character – thick stone walls, wooden beams, the kind of sturdy furniture that’s been here for decades – but everything actually works properly, which honestly isn’t always a given with rural places. The owners clearly know their stuff when it comes to balancing authenticity with comfort. You know what really sold me though? The way they handle the whole “middle of nowhere” thing. Yes, you’re isolated (the nearest proper restaurant is back down that winding road), but they’ve thought about what you’ll actually need. The little kitchen areas are properly equipped, not just for show, and they can point you toward the best spots to grab supplies in nearby Buenavista del Norte before you head up.

The location is what makes or breaks a place like this, and Masca delivers in spades. You’re literally sitting in one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Canary Islands – those famous ravines and volcanic peaks that look like something from another planet. Most tourists just drive up for a quick photo at the viewpoint and leave, but staying here means you get to experience how the light changes throughout the day, how quiet it gets after sunset, how the morning mist rolls through the valleys. The hiking is incredible if you’re into that sort of thing (the Masca Gorge trail starts practically at your doorstep), but honestly, just sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine watching the sun set over the Atlantic is pretty spectacular too. Fair warning though – this isn’t a place for spontaneous trips. You need to book well ahead, especially in winter when the weather’s perfect, and you definitely want to rent a car with decent brakes for those mountain roads. But if you’re looking to completely disconnect and experience a side of Tenerife that most people never see, this little gem delivers exactly what it promises.

  Excellent, recommendable place. The village itself is beautifully situated and quiet, among the mountains. The house is carefully prepared for guests. The host takes care of the house with the utmost care.

  The setting is absolutely sublime, surrounded by rocky peaks, and sitting above the spectacular Masca gorge. The house is quiet and comfortable, fitted out to a high standard in a lovely rustic style.

  This little house is true treasure. The view is spectacular, the place itself is comfortable and clean and has everything you need. The caretaker Pedro was very friendly and helpful (with a little help from Google Translate!).
