Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of mountain retreats, but Vista Bonita Atico genuinely surprised me. The name translates to “the best of the mountain” and honestly, they’re not overselling it. You’ll find this gem tucked away on Camino de Jama – not the easiest address to punch into your GPS, but that’s sort of the point. The approach winds through these narrow roads where you’re basically hugging the hillside, and just when you think you’ve taken a wrong turn, there it is. The building itself has that weathered Canarian charm that actually looks better with age, you know? Stone and wood that’s clearly been battling the Atlantic winds for decades.

What really gets you is the view from the attic suite (that’s the “atico” part). I mean, the photos online don’t lie, but they don’t capture how the light changes throughout the day either. Morning coffee while watching the mist roll off the peaks? Yeah, that’s a thing here. The owner – super friendly guy who actually knows the hiking trails like the back of his hand – mentioned that most guests end up spending way more time on the terrace than they planned. The furniture’s nothing fancy, but it’s solid and comfortable enough that you’ll find yourself lingering over breakfast longer than usual. Fair warning though: if you’re coming during the summer months, book early because word’s gotten out about this place among the hiking crowd.

The practical stuff matters too, right? Parking’s actually not a nightmare, which is saying something for this area. There’s a small lot that fits maybe six cars, and the owners are pretty good about coordinating with guests so nobody’s blocking anyone in. The Wi-Fi works fine if you need to check emails, but honestly, the cell signal can be spotty depending on your carrier – Vodafone seemed to work better than Orange when I was there. One thing I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. No traffic noise, just the occasional rustle of wind through the pines and maybe some night birds. The walls are thick enough that you won’t hear your neighbors, which isn’t always a given in these older buildings. Check-in was refreshingly simple – none of that corporate hotel rigmarole, just a quick chat about the local area and a genuine recommendation for dinner (try the fish at the place down in the village, by the way). For a three-star rating, you’re getting way more character and personal attention than you’d find at some flashy resort, and that 8.3 rating feels about right – maybe even conservative.

  What could be improved: We originally booked an apartment on the top floor but were informed at one day before arrival at 8pm that it is not available as current guests decided to prolong their stay by another month. We were offered another apartment on the lower floor with a nice discount but at a much lower standard. Another thing is that the surrounding of the building is extremely dangerous for children – a lot of rubbish in the garden, old furniture, old bathroom equipment, screws, old unprotected stairs. The view from our apartment was quite nice but was distracted by the rubbish in the garden.

  Le logement est très lumineux et coloré. La cuisine a les équipements de base (four, plaque, machine à café, congélateur, frigidaire, machine à laver, lave vaisselle).

  What could be improved: la ubicación, tenias que coger coche para todo, el supermercado mas cercano estaba a 10-15 min en coche. La seguridad del parking era un elástico en la puerta. Estaban arreglando otras villas por lo que la zona de alrededor esta bastante descuidada. La piscina estaba cerrada

  Grand appartement, quii semble tout neuf, avec vue panoramique. Grande piscine couverte. Lave-linge. Grande douche à l'italienne.
  
  What could be improved: Tringles de rideaux manquante dans une chambre ou cassée dans une autre. Porte de la salle de bain/WC qui ne ferme pas et reste grande ouverte. Environnement étrange, en chantier, de nombreuses voitures garées dans le jardin, plus ou moins des épaves, mais pas de place de parking pour les locataires, il faut marcher 100 mètres. Pas de WiFi. Pas de chaine de télé. Propriétaire peu réactif et absent. Excentré.
