You know what struck me first about La Casa del Huerto? The name literally means “House of the Garden,” and honestly, they weren’t kidding around. This little 3-star gem sits right on Calle el Bernegal in Los Baldíos, and I mean literally the moment you walk through the entrance, you get why they chose that name. There’s this gorgeous courtyard space that feels like someone’s abuela lovingly tended it for decades – not manicured to death like some hotels, but actually lived-in and welcoming. The building itself has that authentic Spanish charm without trying too hard, if that makes sense. You can tell it’s been around for a while, but in a good way, like it has stories to tell.
What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel both peaceful and connected at the same time. Los Baldíos isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot – which is actually perfect if you’re looking to experience Spain without the crowds breathing down your neck. You’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough that you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic. The staff here genuinely seem to care about what they’re doing, not just going through the motions. I stayed during what I’d guess was their busy season, and even then, check-in was smooth and they took time to actually explain the neighborhood instead of just handing over a key card. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – clean, comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works. The beds are actually good (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms are updated enough that you’re not dealing with weird old fixtures.
Here’s the thing that really sold me on La Casa del Huerto though – it’s got that 8.6 rating for a reason, and it’s not because they’re trying to be something they’re not. This is a place that knows exactly what it is: a comfortable, authentic Spanish hotel that treats guests like people, not walking credit cards. The location on Calle el Bernegal puts you right in the heart of things without the noise, and you can actually walk to local spots that aren’t just tourist traps. Parking was surprisingly easy (anyone who’s driven in Spain knows this is basically a miracle), and the whole area has this relaxed evening vibe where locals are out walking and chatting. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I wanted to slow down and actually experience the place instead of just checking boxes on some itinerary. It’s not luxury, but it’s real, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

What could be improved: The apartment has no air-conditioning or heating whatsoever. Dampness is felt across the apartment.

The house is really nice and the kitchen is well equipped.
The highway is only 2 km away, so the connections are very good.
The hot water was more than fine, because the house has a gas heater only for hot water.
What could be improved: The house doesn't have any heating system and the temperature was around 17-18 degrees Celsius no matter the moment of the day.

Good location if you don't want to stay inside the city center of Santa Cruz or La Laguna, easy parking on the street, Anaga mountain are super close. Good public transport connection.

What could be improved: Mold (on tea bags, cutting bord), no hot water (no possibility to shower), very cold and humid appartment (and no heating system in place to kind of improve the situation), very little natural light (one has to turn lights by default), little choice available in the kitchen, noisy beds, but even more doors, which you cannot open close without noise, price is not adequate for quality – actually I am surprised it is allowed to be rented, kitchen table does not meet EU standards (already in place for almost 20 years) and should be replaced as in the existing humidity level it is releasing formaldehyde in enormous amounts.
