Hotel Description
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Alta Montaña – honestly, the name made me think it might be one of those generic mountain hotels that tries too hard. But this place actually surprised me. It’s tucked right there on Morro el Cano, which sounds fancy but it’s really just this quiet little street in Vilaflor, and I mean *quiet* – like, you can actually hear the wind in the pine trees at night. The building itself has this understated charm that grows on you. It’s not trying to be a luxury resort or anything, but there’s something genuine about it that feels refreshing after staying in too many cookie-cutter places.
What really got me was how the staff seemed to actually know the area – not just the tourist stuff, but real local knowledge. The woman at reception told me about this little hiking trail that starts basically behind the hotel (I never would have found it otherwise), and she was right about the timing too – early morning is definitely the way to go before it gets busy. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but honestly better than I expected for a 3-star place. Mine faced toward the mountains and I could see why people come here to escape the coast crowds. The shower pressure was actually decent, which… well, you know how that goes in smaller hotels sometimes. One thing though – if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the main road. It’s not terrible, but there’s the occasional truck heading up to the higher villages that might wake you up.
Here’s the thing about Vilaflor that most people don’t realize until they get here – it’s not just a stopover on the way to Teide. The town has this altitude thing going on where it’s cool even when the coast is sweltering, and Hotel Alta Montaña sits right in the sweet spot where you get that mountain air without being so high up that you feel it in your lungs. I ended up staying an extra night because, honestly, after a week of beach resorts and tourist madness, this felt like the real Tenerife. The hotel’s location means you’re walking distance to the few local restaurants (try the one across from the church – can’t remember the name but they do this incredible rabbit stew), and you’re also perfectly positioned if you want to tackle Teide early in the morning. Check-in was smooth, parking is right there and free, and the whole experience just felt… authentic, I guess. Sometimes you find these places that aren’t trying to be everything to everyone, and that’s exactly what makes them special.

The hotel is a gem in Vilaflor and a perfect base for exploring the trails around. Everyone was tremendously friendly and helpful and helped me get a taxi to the Montana Blanca trailhead at 3am which was very smooth. Room is in a very scenic spot. Highly recommend.
Exceptional – Lazar from Romania – 14 June 2025 (10/10)
The staff was amazing, the diner was one of the most delicious meals we had in Tenerife, really amazing.
Also everything is top notch, you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere there and the view over the village and the clouds is amazing. Must stay, we will definitely get back there on our next visit.A beautiful stay in the mountains – Jennifer from Switzerland – 12 June 2025 (10/10)
A beautiful hotel in the middle of nowhere, with beautiful surroundings and a very nice restaurant. The staff was very friendly and although the kitchen in the restaurant was going to close (22:00), they agreed to still serve us (21:30), and we were able to have dinner.
What could be improved: All was great, the room was a bit smaller than expected, but had everything needed. Plus the bathroom was very big and seemed adapted to people with special needs.Excellent retreat at the Teide doorstep – Mark from Slovenia – 4 May 2025 (10/10)
Great stay and location, the view and the atmosphere is perfect if you want some peace and relaxation.
Excellent starting point for hikes.
The unit we had was airy, clean and spacious.
The staff was super friendly.
Prior to our stay, we read some reviews with complaints about the limited choices of the included breakfast, however we found it quite good – fresh fruit, granola, choices between fruit and plain yogurt, salami, prosciutto, different cheeses, coffee machine, tea choices, bacon & eggs, … We especially liked the tortilla española (omlette with potatoes) – if you plan.to hike it gives you a good kick until the next meal 😉.

You should bring warmer clothes when you're here 🙂Fantastic stay – Joyce from Spain – 21 March 2025 (10/10)
The breakfast was exceptional! Location is great, the room was so nice and they even left free cookies and teas and coffee! The cat (Misu) on site was cute too. This hotel was good to stay in after a long day exploring Teide, the restaurants around the hotel had really good local food too. Ample parking space too!
What could be improved: We thought the bonfire worked! And they were in the middle of fixing the jacuzzi pools, but there weren't too much noise as we left already before that!Exceptional – Silvestru from Ireland – 5 March 2025 (10/10)
Very happy with the room we had
