Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed at plenty of places in the Canary Islands, but Hacienda el Terrero actually caught me off guard – in the best way possible. It’s tucked away on the TF5 highway between Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz, which honestly sounds like it could be anywhere, but once you pull up that winding driveway, you realize you’ve found something special. The building itself has this authentic Canarian charm that doesn’t feel forced or touristy – I mean, you can tell they’ve put real thought into preserving that traditional hacienda feel while making everything actually comfortable for modern travelers.

The location is honestly brilliant, even if it doesn’t sound glamorous on paper. You’re about ten minutes from Puerto de la Cruz (closer to the real town center, not just the touristy waterfront), and the drive takes you through some gorgeous banana plantations that most visitors never see. What I loved was how quiet it gets at night – you’re just far enough from the main road noise, but close enough that you’re not stranded if you want to grab dinner somewhere decent. The staff seems to really know the area too, which makes a difference when you’re trying to figure out where locals actually eat or which hiking trails are worth your time. They pointed me toward this little family-run restaurant in Los Realejos that I never would have found otherwise – sometimes those recommendations alone make your whole trip.

The rooms themselves feel substantial, if that makes sense – thick walls, good blackout curtains, and you can tell they’ve invested in proper mattresses and linens. I’m usually pretty picky about hotel beds, but I actually slept well here, which says something. The bathrooms are updated without being sterile, and there’s decent water pressure, which honestly can be hit or miss in this part of Tenerife. What really impressed me was the attention to small details – they’ve got proper reading lights, enough outlets for your devices, and the air conditioning actually works quietly. You can hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, and there’s something about waking up to that mountain air that just feels right. The whole place has this relaxed, unhurried vibe that makes you want to linger over breakfast and actually plan your days instead of just rushing from one tourist spot to the next. For a four-star place, it definitely punches above its weight – I’d go back.

The location was fantastic, with views and sounds of the sea from the window and terrace. The welcome pack of local wine, and a bottle of water was a nice surprise.

We snorkelled at Alcala, after a restaurant owner recommended it over Las Arena. It was amazing, seeing lots of colourful/tropical fish, and whilst we didn't get to see a turtle, we did see a snake eel, which we believe is quite rare.

We loved the remote location. The sound of the ocean crashing on the rocks below was amazing. No light pollution at all so it was great for stargazing as well.

I had a great stay at La Baja El Terrero, one of the apartments with a private terrace with view to the ocean (though you'd still see some staff and guests walking around or on their terrace, which not wasn't an issue for me). Sitting there listening to the waves was fantastic, it was really mesmerizing just to soak it all up.
The apartment was very nicely decorated. Although the kitchen was small, it had most of the equipment necessary. The shower was great.
I actually liked the exposed nature of the apartment. No conditioned air, but fresh ocean air breathing through the cracks in the doors.
I didn't use the pool, but the shared lounge area was nice when the sun came up, and the extra towel was appreciated.
I am usually sensitive to traffic noise and was hesitant since it's next to a busy road, but you don't hear regular traffic at all.
