Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Estudio GEMA? It’s tucked away on this quiet side street – Calle Hermanos Fernández Perdigón – that most tourists never find, but it’s actually perfect because you’re literally a three-minute walk from the main drag without all the noise. I mean, Puerto de la Cruz can get pretty lively, especially during the summer months when the German and British tourists descend en masse, but this little corner stays surprisingly peaceful.
The place itself is sort of like staying in someone’s well-appointed apartment rather than a typical hotel – which makes sense given the “Estudio” name. The rooms have this clean, minimalist vibe that actually works really well in the Canarian heat. There’s something refreshing about the simplicity after spending days wandering around the ornate colonial buildings in the old town. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to keep things modern without losing that local character – you’ll still get those traditional shutters and tile work, but the WiFi actually works (honestly, not always a given in this part of town) and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a freight train.
The location is genuinely brilliant once you get oriented. Walk five minutes toward the coast and you’re at Playa Jardín – those black volcanic beaches that look dramatic in photos but are actually pretty comfortable once you get used to the different texture. Head the other way and you’re climbing up into the residential areas where locals actually live, which gives you a completely different perspective on the island. There’s this little bakery around the corner that opens early – I never caught the name, but the woman who runs it makes these incredible pastries that put hotel breakfast to shame. The staff at GEMA seem to know about spots like this, which is rare for a three-star place. They’re not just checking you in and disappearing; they actually seem to live here and care about the neighborhood.
Look, it’s not luxury – you’re not getting marble bathrooms or a rooftop infinity pool. But honestly, in Puerto de la Cruz, you don’t need that stuff. The whole city is your entertainment, from the crazy-beautiful botanical gardens to those natural pools carved right into the volcanic rock. What you need is a clean, comfortable base where you can crash after long days of exploring, and Estudio GEMA delivers on that completely. The 8.2 rating makes sense when you consider the price point – it’s one of those places that exceeds expectations rather than trying to be something it’s not.
The only minor complaint I’d have is that parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this area, especially if you’re renting a car to explore the island (which you should, by the way – the drive up to Teide is spectacular). But there’s usually something available within a block or two, and the front desk folks seem pretty good at pointing you toward the easier spots. All in all, it’s exactly what you want from a small hotel in the Canaries – authentic, comfortable, and positioned perfectly to actually experience the place rather than just pass through it.

A very good stay for a reasonable price. – Urszula from Poland – 12 February 2024 (8/10)
The location was great, the flat is clean and compact. I like that it has a separate bedroom. It had all key amenities. Overall a great stay.
What could be improved: I like the flat – but for awareness – the flat does not have a balcony.Superb – Red091 from Poland – 1 December 2024 (9/10)

Completa – Marcos from Spain – 20 April 2025 (9/10)

Gracias!
What could be improved: Poca luz del día.Una opción perfecta – Maria from Spain – 20 May 2025 (10/10)
