You know what caught me off guard about Edificio Playa Chica? I was expecting another sterile apartment complex, but this place actually has character. It’s tucked right on Avenida José María Galván Bello – and if you know El Médano at all, you’ll realize that puts you maybe a three-minute walk from the beach. Not the touristy part either, but the stretch where locals actually hang out and the windsurfers gear up in the morning. I mean, you can literally hear the waves from some of the apartments, which is either perfect or slightly annoying depending on how much you need your sleep.

The building itself is honestly pretty solid for what it is. There are only seven apartments total, so it never feels crowded or impersonal like those massive resort complexes further up the coast. Each unit has its own personality – I stayed in apartment 3 and it had this weird but wonderful view where you could see both the ocean and the little side street where the locals park their beat-up Seats and Renaults. The kitchen was actually functional (shocking, I know), and the shower had proper water pressure, which… well, anyone who’s traveled around the Canary Islands knows that’s not always a given. The decor is a bit dated – think early 2000s Spanish apartment vibes – but everything works and it’s clean, which honestly matters more than Instagram-perfect styling.

What really makes this place work is the location and the fact that it feels like you’re staying in a real neighborhood instead of tourist bubble-land. There’s a little grocery store literally around the corner where the owner remembers your face after two visits, and the morning routine of watching the windsurfers head out while you have coffee on the balcony never gets old. El Médano isn’t trying to be fancy – it’s a working town that happens to have incredible wind conditions and a laid-back vibe that’s harder and harder to find these days. The 8.1 rating makes sense because while it’s not luxury, it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. Parking can be a bit of an adventure during peak season (July and August get pretty crazy), but most of the year you’ll find a spot within a block or two. If you’re the type who needs a concierge and daily housekeeping, this isn’t your place. But if you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing Tenerife instead of just visiting it, and you don’t mind doing your own dishes, Edificio Playa Chica hits that sweet spot between authentic and comfortable.

  The location is just perfect. You are literally looking out onto the sea and we spent ages just watching the kite surfing which was so entertaining. We were a party of four with two bedrooms between us and the rooms were large and spacious with lovely natural light spilling in all the time. Lots of lovely restaurants and shops right outside the door so really was the perfect location for us.

  Excellent location and convenient flat. The beds are very comfy and there's a great shower.
  
  What could be improved: The walls of the building are quite thin and the staircase is a bit echoey, so I was woken up by footsteps and shouting during our first night. With earplugs I slept like a baby though.

  The location is superb. In 100 mt range I counted 2 supermarkets and around 20 different restaurants and bars. The little beach just underneath our windows is perfect for a quick dip any time of the day and it’s perfect for taking pictures at dawn and sunset. The apartment itself is complete with everything and looks way bigger than advertised. I know it has been mentioned many times but falling asleep at night with the sound of waves is pure gold!!
