Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in the Canary Islands, but 5 Dragos Suites on Calle San Blas actually surprised me. La Orotava isn’t where most tourists end up – they’re usually rushing past on their way to Teide or hitting the beaches down in Puerto de la Cruz – but honestly, that’s exactly what makes this spot special. The street itself is this narrow little thing that feels properly Spanish, not like the tourist strips you find everywhere else. You can actually hear the church bells from the nearby plaza in the morning, which sounds cheesy but is actually pretty lovely when you’re having coffee on your balcony.

The suites themselves are bigger than you’d expect for a 3-star place, and I mean properly spacious, not just “European spacious.” The kitchenette is functional enough that I actually cooked a few meals instead of eating out every night (the local market on Saturdays is just a few minutes’ walk, by the way). What really got me was the attention to detail – the owner clearly knows what travelers need. There’s proper lighting for reading, enough outlets for all your devices, and the Wi-Fi actually works in every corner of the room. The bathroom has one of those rainfall showers that doesn’t leave you freezing while you’re trying to rinse shampoo out of your hair. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to relax.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to experience real Tenerife without completely avoiding tourist stuff. You’re maybe 15 minutes down the winding road to Puerto de la Cruz (parking there is a nightmare, but the bus connections are decent), and the historic center of La Orotava is literally outside your door. I spent hours just wandering around the old mansions and those impossibly green gardens – the Casa de los Balcones is touristy but worth it, and there’s this little tapas place around the corner from the hotel that locals actually go to. The woman running reception gave me directions that included landmarks like “turn at the house with the blue door” – that kind of local knowledge you can’t get from Google Maps. Fair warning though: if you’re not comfortable with narrow streets and some uphill walking, this might not be your spot. But if you want to feel like you’re staying in someone’s neighborhood rather than a hotel district, and you appreciate when the small details are done right, you’ll get why this place has such good ratings.

  The building is 10 minutes walk from the city center (one of the best cities on the inland) and at the same time it's hidden in blind alley so it's really quite. You can park from free on the street – usually in the alley where the apartment is located, if not just on the next one.
  The apartment itself (on the top floor) is quite new, modern and clean. It's bright and have a nice terrace. As it's on the top floor, when we came back in the afternoon/evening it was quite hot inside and there's no air conditioning. For us it wasn't a problem as we visited at the beginning of October and we could air the apartment quickly but in summer it can be a problem.
