Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about El Perucho? I was expecting just another rural getaway, but this place actually has something pretty unique going on. The name gives it away – you’re getting both a traditional casita and an honest-to-goodness cave house experience right off the Carretera General del Sur. I mean, when was the last time you could literally sleep in a cave that didn’t involve roughing it? The location in Güimar is perfect too – you’re away from the tourist madness of the south coast but still close enough that you can hit the beaches when you want. The road up can be a bit winding (typical Canary Islands stuff), but parking isn’t the nightmare you’d expect.

What really gets me is how they’ve managed to keep that authentic rural feel without sacrificing comfort. The cave house is the obvious showstopper – it’s carved right into the hillside and stays naturally cool, which honestly beats air conditioning any day when you’re dealing with Tenerife heat. The traditional casita has this weathered charm that feels genuinely lived-in, not like some sanitized vacation rental. Both spaces have these thick walls that keep things quiet, and you’ll actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic. The furnishings are simple but thoughtful – local ceramics, rustic wood pieces, that sort of thing. Nothing fancy, but it works. The kitchen setup is better than expected too, which matters if you’re planning to cook with ingredients from the local markets in Güimar.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t for everyone. If you need room service and a concierge, look elsewhere. But if you want to experience how people actually live in rural Tenerife, without the tourist polish, El Perucho nails it. The 9.4 rating makes sense when you consider what you’re getting for a 3-star place. The owners clearly know their stuff about the area (they’ll point you toward hiking trails that aren’t on the typical tourist maps), and the whole experience feels more like staying with locals than checking into a hotel. Plus, you’re positioned perfectly for exploring the eastern part of the island – the Malpaís de Güimar is right there, and you can reach the Anaga Mountains without dealing with the chaos around Santa Cruz. Just bring a decent flashlight if you’re staying in the cave house and maybe pack layers since it can get surprisingly cool in the evenings, especially during winter months.

Reviews

  • Unusual but very pleasant stay ! – Zivile from United Kingdom – 27 March 2025 (10/10)

It's a unique and very unusual experience to live in a cave. And I loved it!!!!! 😍 very weird feeling but great experience. The owner thought about every small detail. Everything was there that I needed! Double bed, fridge, full kitchen, big shower with plenty towels. Shower gell and shampoo if needed. Everything was neat, tidy, and clean. Really made my stay like a ferry tale ! 😀 I will definitely return ❤️❤️❤️
P.s. the owner, Miguel, was an amazing hoast, was advisable, and informative with everything I needed.
Thank you again for an incredible experience! 😍

  • The cave experience – Filippos_ from Switzerland – 8 February 2025 (10/10)

Amazing experience to stay in a cave. Miguel is a friendly and helpful host. The accommodation had a kitchen and everything we needed during our stay. The area is very calm and relaxing.

What could be improved: In February the cave felt a little cold at times but this is to be expected in a cave.

  • Amazing place – Asta from United Kingdom – 1 January 2025 (10/10)

We really enjoyed our stay at Miguel's place. We had a different experience living high in the mountains. The place is exceptionally clean, we found everything we needed for a short stay. The cottage is very comfortable, with a beautiful terrace in the yard. Miguel is a very nice and helpful host, and Miguel's dad is also a very cool and helpful person. I definitely 100% recommend staying at this place, even for a short time!!! And we will definitely come back…
Thank you very much Miguel for the Christmas gift 🌲

What could be improved: We liked everything

  • Exceptional – Busa from Latvia – 1 January 2025 (10/10)

We where staying in hause that is not with cave walls. It was very comfortable, lovely and romatic. We had kitchen with all needed and even coffe machine. Our house is suitable as for shot as for longer stays. The host was wellcoming and easy to reach if needed. I would definetly come back.
In the morning we had the chance to visit cave house – oh wow, certanly would sugest to try it if available. 🙂

  • This place has good vibrations 🙂 – Kristi from Estonia – 6 December 2024 (9/10)

I liked that the place was cosy, light and clean. The host was very helpful and friendly. It wasn´t difficult to find the place or travel to other places from there. We had most things we needed in the little house. I liked that the host taught and showed me how to drive up the steep hill where the house was situated. He also offered us to take fruits from his yard.

What could be improved: For me it was difficult to drive to the house at first because of the steep road and I got a lot of adrenaline because of that (our car was weak too). It would be nice if there were more blankets and towels and a washingmachine. But I am sure the owner would have organised those if would have asked. I am a bit sorry that our house wasn´t actually in the cave because I hoped to experience it. There are 2 accomodations and only one is in the cave.

  • Very nice – Rosanna from Netherlands – 25 September 2024 (10/10)

It was a really nice stay. The host was very kind and even before the trip he answered questions i had very quick! It was clean and very nice. The location is nice in the middle from santa cruz and los cristianos. Everything easy to reach with car. We also got some fruit from the host, very nice!

What could be improved: I think it’s mentioned in other reviews, there are i think more apartments. We didn’t have the cave one but the other. The apartment we had, we really
liked as well so it was not a problem. But I thought i had booked the real ‘cave experience’ .

There were a few ants, since you stayed in nature. It wasn’t to bad for us, but remind that the stay is in nature !

To get to the property, it’s easier to go through Guimar if you are not used to steep roads. (Google maps sends you another way and this way is steep and hard/scary if you are inexperienced). Also the last part i very steep, but in gear 1 it’s fine and a lot less scary after the first time.

  • Exceptional – Timon from Switzerland – 19 August 2024 (10/10)

What could be improved: Just dont take the second cabin

  • Exceptional – Ozziebela from Poland – 21 May 2024 (10/10)

Exceptional place, I recommend to everybody!

  • Wonderful stay in a unique property – Hbhigg from United Kingdom – 18 April 2024 (9/10)

Great experience to spend time in the cave house. It is very spacious, great shower and good kitchen outside is a great terrace with views. Lovley area easy to travel to by car but there are also buses. Easy to visit other areas of Tenerife by car.

What could be improved: As previously stated the drive is steep but this is usual in the mountains.

  • Super friendly owners, nice surroundings, great value for money. – Michał from Poland – 9 April 2024 (10/10)

The little house is tastefully decorated and despite the size it's really quite comfortable. The owner Miguel and his dad Jose are very friendly and welcoming, they definitely made us feel at home (Jose showed us everything in the garden and even let us try some fresh fruit!). Next time we come to Tenerife, we will gladly stay in La Pajara / Guimar again, but perhaps this time in the other house that belongs to Miguel and is in a real/natural cave – the one we stayed in (right next to the "casa cueva") is a little more "standard" 😉
