You know what struck me first about Casas Los Abuelos De Calderon? The name itself tells you everything – it literally means “the grandparents’ houses,” and honestly, that’s exactly what this place feels like. Tucked away on the TF-344 road in Icod el Alto, it’s one of those finds that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something the big tour groups haven’t discovered yet. The drive up is actually part of the experience – you’re winding through proper Canarian countryside, not the touristy coastal strip, and suddenly there it is, this collection of traditional houses that look like they’ve been there forever.

What I love about this place is how it manages to feel both rustic and comfortable without trying too hard. The buildings have that authentic Canarian architecture – you know, the kind with thick stone walls and wooden balconies that actually serve a purpose, not just for show. Inside, it’s clear someone put real thought into keeping the character while making sure you’ve got everything you need. The rooms aren’t huge (this is a 3-star spot, after all), but they’re thoughtfully laid out with those small touches that matter – decent lighting for reading, proper hooks for hanging clothes, windows that actually open to let in that mountain air. Speaking of air, it gets properly cool here at night, which is a blessing if you’re used to the sometimes stifling heat down by the coast.

The location is honestly brilliant if you want to explore the real Tenerife. You’re about a 15-minute drive from the famous Icod de los Vinos with its ancient dragon tree, but up here you get the peace and quiet without the day-tripper crowds. I mean, you can actually hear the wind in the pine trees at night – when was the last time you experienced that at a hotel? The staff clearly know the area inside and out, and they’ll point you toward hiking trails and local restaurants that aren’t in the guidebooks. Parking’s never an issue, which sounds mundane but trust me, after dealing with coastal resort parking situations, it’s a genuine relief. The whole setup just works – it’s got that 8.4 rating for good reason. It’s not flashy, it’s not trying to be something it’s not, but it delivers exactly what you hope for when you book a place like this: authentic atmosphere, solid comfort, and the feeling that you’re experiencing Tenerife the way locals actually live it.

  Casa ubicada en zona bonita, con exteriores muy bellos. Pero es húmeda y necesita mejorar el confort si no son meses cálidos. Si se invierte en el sistema de calentar la casa, ganará mucho

  La casa es la típica casa de pueblomuy acojedora. Tiene dos habitaciones, un baño y una cocina. En el pasillo hay un chimenea que dispones de leña para hacer fuego y en la cocina tienes una barbacoa para hacer fuego y cocinar. La cocina está bien dotada de utensilios y también tenía alimentos básicos como café, azúcar, sal, aceite…. Hay un patio trasero con una mesa y sillas para comer y un terrado para poder tender la ropa. Las vistas del Teide son muy bonitas y por la tarde el cielo es espectacular. La dueña es encantadora y cualquier cosa que nos pasara nos la solucionaba al instante.
  
  What could be improved: Nos faltaría un microondas. Otra cosa a tener en cuenta que está situado en Icod el Alto y que por las noches hace frío, id bien abrigados. Utilizareis las dos estufas de gas que hay disponibles en la casa.

  La zona tranquila y fresquita puesto que es zona bastante alta…No hay contaminación lumínica de noche se ve perfectamente, la atmósfera limpia..muy buena para asadero familiar..

  Un sitio super tranquilo y conectado con la naturaleza del lugar y la anfitriona estaba siempre pendiente si la escribíamos cualquier duda que teníamos
  
  What could be improved: Llegar al alojamiento es complicado ya que esta a mucha altura y las carreteras son las que son. Algunos utensilios de cocina no estaban limpios y la caldera tarda poco en acabar el agua caliente.

  Sales a la puerta y ves el teide de frente y en la terraza el mar, la paz y el silencio es todo lo que necesitaba para desconectar. La casa es tal cual se ve en las fotos, la cama estaba bien, la chimenea y la parrilla en la cocina fueron imprescindibles para estos días.
  
  What could be improved: La limpieza fue justita, las almohadas necesitan ser renovadas al igual que las ropa de cama y aunque se entiende que la montaña es húmeda, hay mucha humedad en las paredes sobre todo en los dormitorios. Como recomendacion, estaría muy bien que junto a la hoja de bienvenida hubiese una pequeña guía de recomendaciones de comercios, restaurantes o rutas de senderismo de la zona.

  Sitio tranquilo, alejado del bullicio, vistas increíbles, regalo de un vinito de la isla. Genial para desconectar, además tiene para dejar el coche dentro ya que fuera no hay donde aparcar

  Der Außenbereich der Unterkunft war wirklich toll. Man hat direkten Blick aufs Meer, eine Sonnenterasse, einen Garten mit Grill etc. einfach traumhaft. Achtung: die Unterkunft ist jedoch so weit im kühleren Norden und in den Bergen der Insel, dass das Wetter häufig sehr schlecht, regnerisch und neblig ist und man den tollen Außenbereich deshalb nicht wirklich nutzen kann.
  Die Küche ist wunderbar ausgestattet zum selber versorgen.
  
  What could be improved: Die Gastgeberin kann kein einziges Wort Englisch sondern nur Spanisch, weshalb die Kommunikation am Anfang bezüglich Schlüsselübergabe, Ankunft sehr kompliziert war und wir alles auf Spanisch übersetzen mussten. Die Räume der Unterkunft sind bei schlechtem Wetter sehr dunkel aufgrund der kleinen Fenster und extrem schwachen Lampen. Im Badezimmer kann man sich beispielsweise nicht abschminken, da man die Haut im Spiegel nicht wirklich sehen kann. Dazu kommt, dass es keine normale Heizung, sondern lediglich einen Holzofen gibt, welchen man selber mit Holz betätigen muss, was generell kein Problem ist, jedoch ist der Ofen im Flur und die Wärme reicht erst nach sehr sehr langer Brennzeit in die Zimmer, in welchen man sich aufhält. Daher mussten wir in der gesamten Wohnung außer im Flur eine Jacke tragen, ansonsten wäre es zu kalt gewesen. Eventuell ist es in anderen Jahreszeiten dort wärmer, wir waren im März da und es war sehr kalt & dunkel. Wir mussten jeden Tag 1,5 Stunden in den Süden der Insel fahren, um in ein sonniges Wetter zu gelangen, was uns bei der Buchung nicht klar war. Wir dachten, dass es im Norden auch schön ist und der Temperatur und wolkenunterschied nicht so extrem ist.
