You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Casa Rural Merche on Calle la Palma – honestly, the street’s so narrow I thought my GPS was having a breakdown. But this little gem in Chío completely surprised me. It’s one of those places that feels like you’ve stumbled into someone’s actual home, which I guess makes sense given the whole “casa rural” thing. The building itself has this weathered charm that you can’t fake – thick stone walls that probably keep the place cool even when the Canarian sun is doing its worst, and these wooden shutters that actually creak in the most satisfying way when you open them in the morning.

What really got me was how quiet it is here, especially considering you’re still close enough to the action. I mean, Chío isn’t exactly a party town, but you’re positioned perfectly between the coast and the mountains without feeling stuck in the middle of nowhere. The owners – and I’m pretty sure Merche herself was around when I visited – genuinely seem to care about the place. You can tell in the little things, like how the courtyard plants are actually thriving (not just surviving like at most small hotels), and the way they’ve managed to keep the traditional Canarian architecture intact without making it feel like a museum. The rooms are simple but comfortable – nothing fancy, but the beds are good and the bathrooms work properly, which honestly is more than I can say for some four-star places I’ve stayed at.

Here’s the thing that really sells this place for me: the location gives you options. You can drive down to the coast in maybe twenty minutes if you want beaches, or head up toward Teide if you’re feeling adventurous – and trust me, the drive up there is spectacular, especially early in the morning when the light hits the volcanic landscape just right. But you can also just hang around Chío itself, which has this authentic island vibe that the tourist areas have mostly lost. There’s a decent little restaurant within walking distance, and the local grocery store actually has everything you need if you want to grab supplies and use the kitchen facilities. Parking’s not an issue either, which is a relief if you’ve ever tried to park in some of the coastal towns during peak season. The 8.9 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be something it’s not, just doing the rural hotel thing really well. Perfect if you want to experience the real Tenerife without completely roughing it.

  Amazing view to the garden, felt like an oasis. Whole complex is very beautiful. The inside is humble and full of stuff, but it has everything you need! Host is lovely. Very close to the bus stop. I had a perfect and idyllic stay, can only recommend.

  Wonderful patio with a lot of plants. Tasty oranges, loquat, lemons, and almonds available from the garden. Lovely views of the church and rooftops. Roof terrace and garden table for breakfast. The landlady is very friendly and made us feel welcome.

  Great tradition place on Tenerife! Very special, unusual place, you feel like you born here. Owner is very friendly, everything very clean. Fruit trees on the territory and you can have super fresh lemons, oranges just get with your hands. Great experience!
