Hotel Description

You know what really struck me about Casa Rural Chamorga? The moment I walked up to that weathered stone building on Calle Piedra del Barranco, I could tell this wasn’t your typical Tenerife tourist trap. I mean, honestly, most people zoom right past this part of Santa Cruz heading to the beaches, but they’re missing something pretty special tucked away in what feels like a forgotten corner of the island.

The guesthouse sits in this tiny hamlet called Chamorga – and I’m talking seriously tiny, like maybe a dozen houses clinging to these dramatic cliffs on the Anaga peninsula. The owner, María, actually grew up here and you can tell she knows every single person in the village. When I was checking in, she was casually chatting with a neighbor about whose goats had wandered off again, all while explaining to me how to navigate the winding mountain roads if I wanted to explore the laurel forests nearby. The whole place has this authentic rural vibe that’s getting harder and harder to find – wooden beams, traditional Canarian architecture, and these thick stone walls that keep everything surprisingly cool even when it’s blazing outside.

What really won me over was the practicality of it all. The rooms are simple but spotless, with these amazing views out over the Atlantic that make you forget you’re only about 45 minutes from the airport chaos. The beds are actually comfortable (not always a given in these older buildings), and there’s decent WiFi, though honestly you might not want to use it much. The real magic happens when you step outside – there are these incredible hiking trails that literally start from the front door, leading through ancient forests and down to secluded beaches that most tourists never even know exist. María keeps a little notebook of trail recommendations, and she’s not shy about telling you which ones are too ambitious if you’re not in decent shape. Parking can be a bit tight since the streets are narrow, but there’s usually space if you don’t mind walking a few minutes uphill. The only real downside is that you’ll definitely need a car to get here – public transport is pretty much non-existent, and the mountain roads can be a bit nerve-wracking in the dark. But that isolation is exactly what makes it special. It’s the kind of place where you fall asleep to complete silence and wake up to birds you can’t identify, where the most pressing decision is whether to hike to the lighthouse or just sit on the terrace with a book and watch the clouds roll in from Africa.

That was my dream location at the end of nowhere. Stunning nature around, extremely cozy guest house with good energy , very comfortable bed with a warm blanket and many pillows, kitchen with everything you need, hiking trails just outside of the door. I would like to come back if it was not so expensive.

Place is just magical, quiet and so chilled. Great base for hiking in the mountains that surround it as some great trails start just next to it. Chamorga village is remote, so plan ahead with supplies as there is no shop and just one restaurant around. And no phone reception however there is a wifi internet. For us all the above was a huge plus if you want to escape from civilization a bit. There is also very nice shared kitchen with full equipment and dinning places inside and outside of the property. Owner provides very helpful tips beforehand as well as he knows the local amazing trails, so worth asking. Be aware, one of local cats is super friendly and you may have problems to stand up from your laying char in the garden when she sits on your knees demanding cuddles 🙂 Reasuming, highly recommend!
