Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Casa Ermita El Medano? It’s actually right where you want to be without feeling like you’re stuck in tourist central. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from that gorgeous stretch of beach where all the windsurfers hang out, but the hotel sits just far enough back on Avenida Jose Miguel Galván Bello that you’re not dealing with the constant buzz of beach bars and rental shops. The building itself has this understated charm – not trying too hard to be boutique-y, but clearly someone cares about the details. When I walked in, there was this subtle smell of sea salt mixed with something floral (maybe jasmine?), and the lobby had that lived-in elegance that actually makes you feel welcome rather than intimidated.
What really sets this place apart, honestly, is how it feels like the owners actually understand El Médano. The staff – at least the ones I dealt with – knew their stuff about the local scene. They pointed me toward this little tapas spot about three blocks inland that I never would’ve found otherwise, and when I mentioned wanting to try windsurfing, they didn’t just hand me a generic brochure. They actually explained the best times to hit the water based on the wind patterns and suggested specific schools based on skill level. The rooms have this perfect balance of being comfortable without being overly fancy – good shower pressure (seriously, this matters more than people think), blackout curtains that actually work, and windows that open properly if you want that ocean breeze instead of AC all night. I stayed during late September, which apparently is still pretty busy season here, but the hotel never felt crowded or rushed.
Here’s the thing about El Médano that took me a while to figure out – it’s got this dual personality where it’s simultaneously this laid-back fishing village and a world-class windsurfing destination. Casa Ermita gets that balance right. You can stumble back from a late dinner at one of those family-run restaurants near the harbor, or you can be up at dawn with your gear heading to the beach, and either way feels natural. The location is honestly perfect for both – close enough to the action but with actual parking (which, trust me, is not a given in this area), and the neighborhood has that authentic Spanish coastal vibe without being too sleepy. I’d definitely come back, especially since I barely scratched the surface of the hiking trails up toward Montaña Roja. Plus, the 8.5 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place on the island, but it nails everything that actually matters when you’re exploring this part of Tenerife.
