Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about the Barceló Santiago? It’s tucked away on this quiet little street called La Hondura, and honestly, I almost missed it the first time – but that’s actually part of its charm. While Puerto de Santiago can get pretty hectic with families and day-trippers heading to Los Gigantes cliffs, this place feels like you’ve found some sort of secret hideaway just for grown-ups.

The adults-only thing isn’t just marketing speak here – they really mean it, and you can tell the moment you walk into the lobby. There’s this immediate sense of calm that you just don’t get at other hotels in the area. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love kids, but sometimes you want to read your book by the pool without dodging pool noodles, you know? The staff gets this too – they’re not rushing around dealing with lost children or explaining pool rules every five minutes. Instead, they actually have time to chat and give you proper recommendations. One guy at the front desk told me about this little tapas spot in town that I never would’ve found otherwise (it’s called Casa Tomás, by the way – absolutely worth the walk).

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve thought about the little things that matter when you’re trying to unwind. The pool area never feels crowded, even during peak season – I was there in July and still managed to snag a decent lounger around 10 AM. The rooms are solid for a 4-star, nothing fancy but everything works properly, and here’s something I appreciated: the air conditioning actually keeps up with the Canarian heat. You’d be surprised how many hotels here struggle with that. The balconies are decent sized too, and if you’re lucky enough to get one facing west, the sunset views toward La Palma are pretty spectacular – though honestly, even the courtyard-facing rooms are quiet and pleasant.

Location-wise, you’re about a 10-minute walk from the main strip where all the restaurants and bars are, which is perfect because you get the peace and quiet but you’re not stuck taking taxis everywhere. The black sand beach is literally right there, and while it’s not the most Instagram-worthy beach you’ll ever see, it’s got this raw, volcanic beauty that grows on you. Plus, the water’s usually calmer here than at some of the more exposed beaches further north.

I’ll be honest – this isn’t the kind of place that’s going to wow you with flashy amenities or over-the-top luxury. But if you’re looking for a well-run, genuinely relaxing base to explore this part of Tenerife without dealing with chaos, it hits the sweet spot. The 8.8 rating makes sense when you consider what it’s actually trying to do. Sometimes the best hotels are the ones that just get out of your way and let you enjoy being somewhere beautiful – and that’s exactly what the Barceló Santiago does.

Reviews

  • Özge from Denmark (9/10)

Location is beautiful, right by the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Breakfast buffet was big and wide variety. The facilities are simple and nice.
Unfortunately we had to leave early due to a family health emergency, the staff was so helpful, kind and understanding. We would like to be back.

  • Andrew from United Kingdom (9/10)

The most amazing location and views – over La Gomera and of course the huge and constantly changing Gogantos.
Beautiful pool area and more than decent buffet breakfast and dinner provision.
A nice quiet little town, not the very busy seaside areas like the rest of the South coast of the island. A local supermarket and other small restaurants – the closest to the hotel was the best. Amazing food and views.
I completed a 'half time' online survey (from Head Office I think) and within a day we had extra hangers and a couple of other minor things I'd mentioned. We travel a lot, but it was a very impressive experience.
