You know what caught me off guard about Alojamientos KYOMU El Pilar? The name makes it sound way more mysterious than it actually is – honestly, I was expecting some zen Buddhist retreat or something with that “KYOMU” bit. But it’s just a solid, no-nonsense place tucked into one of La Laguna’s quieter residential streets. Calle el Pilar is one of those narrow cobblestone roads where you’ll hear the church bells from the nearby cathedral pretty much every hour, which I actually found kind of charming after the first night (though fair warning if you’re a super light sleeper). The building itself has that typical Canarian architecture – you know, the kind with the wooden balconies and thick walls that keep things cool even when it’s blazing outside.

What I really appreciated was how the place feels more like staying in someone’s converted family home than a typical hotel. The rooms are simple but thoughtfully put together, and there’s this lived-in quality that makes you feel less like a tourist and more like you’re crashing at a friend’s place. The staff – well, I mean, it’s a small operation so you’ll probably end up talking to the same two or three people your whole stay – they actually know the neighborhood inside and out. When I asked about getting to the university area (La Laguna’s got that whole UNESCO World Heritage thing going on), they didn’t just point me toward the main drag but told me about this little shortcut through the old quarter that cuts like ten minutes off the walk. Plus, they’ve got the parking situation figured out, which is honestly half the battle in these old town centers where the streets were designed for donkeys, not rental cars.

The 7.5 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be fancy, and you’re not getting marble bathrooms or a rooftop pool, but everything works exactly as it should. The WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, the water pressure is decent, and the beds are actually comfortable (I’ve stayed in plenty of “charming” places where the mattresses felt like they were stuffed with rocks). What really sold me on the place was the location – you’re close enough to walk to all the good stuff in La Laguna’s historic center, but far enough from the main tourist strips that you’re not dealing with crowds of people taking selfies under your window at all hours. There’s this little local bar around the corner that does incredible papas arrugadas, and a bakery about two blocks down where the locals line up for fresh bread in the mornings. I mean, that’s the kind of neighborhood intel you want when you’re trying to actually experience a place rather than just check it off your list.
